Is Modafinil safe to use ?
In the last 40 years, many people have tried modafinil and there have been many studies that have been done on modafinil. It was concluded that modafinil is safe in recommended doses, which is 100-200 mg per day. A new class of psychostimulants has emerged in recent years and its called Eugeroics and modafinil, adrafinil, and ampakine which come into this category . The term Eugeroic means “ positive arousal “ or good arousal and these eugeroics don’t have side effect like other psychostimulants like addiction, mental disturbance ( psychosis ) or negative effect on sleep. Examples of other psychostimulants are amphetamine like adderall and methylphenidate (it isn’t an amphetamine).
Since modafinil is a synthetic chemical, it does have a specific effect on human body and with almost every synthetic medication, modafinil does have side effects including low potential for addiction. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4319252/ but this potential is much lower than amphetamine like Adderall. One side effect of modafinil is increased blood pressure. This side effect of modafinil is more pronounced in people who are overweight or have heart related problems or blood pressure related problems. The second side effect of modafinil is disturbed sleep. If you have trouble sleeping for whatever reason, the use of modafinil is not recommended because it will only make your problem worse. Remember that the main effect of modafinil is to make you more alert.
Unfortunately, some people take up to 400 mg and it almost always disturb their sleep. A high dose of modafinil( more than 200 mg ) will also increase blood pressure with increased effect on the central nervous system. If your CNS get too exited or disturbed, it will be harder for you to sleep.
Many studies have shown that modafinil users are safe in recommended doses and it does not affect cardiovascular or sleep wake cycle. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2045706/.
A very prestigious institute like Harvard and Oxford had confirmation study that it does increase cognition and focus in sleep deprived individuals. At present, there is no enough data about its effect on individuals who are not deprived of sleep. There is urgent need for large scale studies with prime focus on effect of modafinil on users who are not deprived of sleep but when we look into the real world, many people who use it do not have narcolepsy. They are being used mainly for increase in cognition after taking modafinil. Modafinil can also be used as “ anti fatigue” agent . Modafinil exerts its wakefulness, promoting effect by its action on the anterior hypothalamus .
